Main R&D Interest Areas

With a strong focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications, given that AI is a multi-disciplinary area interacting with many other areas of knowledge inside and outside Computer Science, my main list of interest areas is the following:

bullet

Artificial Intelligence
bullet

Knowledge representation paradigms: Logic, Production Systems, Semantic Networks and Frames.

bullet

Tools, such as SNePS (Semantic Network Processing), KEE (Knowledge Engineering Environment) on Lisp Machines, where I developed a few expert systems,

bullet

Distributed Artificial Intelligence / Multi-Agent Systems.
bullet

This is a multi-disciplinary field, where several interest areas converge, including the following ones:

bullet

Deontic Logic and Agency Logic, as formal tools for representing social relationships in multi-agent systems.

bullet

Organizational Semiotics, as a framework for understanding multi-agent information systems at several levels (syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and social).

bullet

Communication and coordination of activities, based on social models.

bullet

Agent and multi-agent architectures, especially the development of the normative EDA agent model for multi-agent systems, which I proposed in my PhD thesis.

bullet

Programming Languages / Environments.
bullet

LISP occupies a special place in this list. More recently I have used JINI, JESS and other Java related tools, where I developed some multi-agent systems.
