Main R&D Interest AreasWith a strong focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications, given that AI is a multi-disciplinary area interacting with many other areas of knowledge inside and outside Computer Science, my main list of interest areas is the following:

This is a Thematic Network focusing on e-learning for engineering disciplines. 1998-1999: Representation of the School of Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal in a Treaty of Windsor project with the School of Computing of the University of Staffordshire, entitled “Resolving Semantic Conflicts using Pragmatic Knowledge - An Enabling Method for Information Sharing within Large Organisations”. 1998-1999: Collaborated in project SARA (Sociedade de Agentes Responsáveis e Animados), in the area of Multi-Agent Systems Modelling, whose leader was Professor Hélder Coelho (FCUL). 1997-present: Coordination of a SOCRATES/ERASMUS program for staff and student exchange between the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal and other international universities, including the Staffordshire University (UK), the Vaasa Institute of Technology (Finland) and the University of Konstanz. 1997-2000: Coordination of a research project under development at the School of Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal entitled "Heterogeneous Information Systems Integration in Organizational Environments". This project, financed by the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal, involved a team of five researchers and was completed successfully. It proposed a new multi-agent system model and construction methodology, which were evaluated using an internal case-study. 1996-1999: Representation of the School of Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal in the project PRAXIS XXI - P/SAU/0074/96, financed by the Foundation for the Science and Technology in Portugal. This project was developed in collaboration with the Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST) and the Instituto do Sono e Cronobiologia (ISTEL). In the scope of this project, the role of the School of Technology was to develop an Expert System in the area of sleep diagnosis using polysomnographic data. Postgraduate StudentsMScCo-orientation of Dominic Peciuch on A Case Study of an Agent Communication Environment (Dr. Bernadette Sharp was the Principal Supervisor). Thesis completed in 2000, at Staffordshire University, UK. PhDCo-orientation of Jose Cordeiro on his work entitled "A Normative Approach to Information Systems Modelling" (Professor Kecheng Liu is the Principal Supervisor). Thesis started in 2002 and expected to complete in 2005, at Reading University, UK. Co-orientation of Angela Nobre on her work entitled "Facilitating Learning in Knowledge Intensive Organisations" (Dr. Bernadette Sharp is the Principal Supervisor). Thesis started in 2001 and expected to complete in 2004, at Staffordshire University, UK.
