With a strong focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications, given that AI is a multi-disciplinary area interacting with many other areas of knowledge inside and outside Computer Science, my main list of interest areas is the following:

R&D Projects

2003: Represented EST-Setúbal on the ERASMUS CD European Project 29859-IC-5-2000-1-DE-ERASMUS-EPS-1, "E_Commerce, a new dimension in European trading", with the aim of developing an European postgraduate diploma on e-commerce.

2003: Coordination of the second phase of the internal R&D project, supported by EST-Setúbal, entitled “Development of an e-Learning platform”.

2003: Coordination of the second phase of the internal R&D project, supported by EST-Setúbal, entitled “Datamining for understanding the failure rate of EST-Setúbal students”.

2003-2004: Represented EST-Setúbal on the LEONARDO European project 2002-I-02-B-F-PP-120206, entitled: "Protoma: Prototyping Manager".

2003-2004: Member of the project entitled "Tecnologias e Metodologias de e-Learning para a Educação Assistida por Computador no IPS"; Project financed by the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal.

2001-2002: Coordination of an internal effort for promoting EST-Setúbal internal R&D activities in the area of Organized Activity, with the collaboration of Dr. Anatol Holt as invited scientist. 

2000-2001: Representation of the School of Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal in a Treaty of Windsor project with the School of Computing of the University of Staffordshire, entitled “Norm-Governed Agents for E-Commerce”.

2000-2001: Coordination of an internal R&D project, supported by EST-Setúbal, entitled “Development of an e-Learning platform”.

2000-2001: Coordination of an internal R&D project, supported by EST-Setúbal, entitled “Datamining for understanding the failure rate of EST-Setúbal students”.

2000: Participation on the THEIERE European Project. This is a Thematic Network focusing on e-learning for engineering disciplines.

1998-1999: Representation of the School of Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal in a Treaty of Windsor project with the School of Computing of the University of Staffordshire, entitled “Resolving Semantic Conflicts using Pragmatic Knowledge - An Enabling Method for Information Sharing within Large Organisations”.

1998-1999: Collaborated in project SARA (Sociedade de Agentes Responsáveis e Animados), in the area of Multi-Agent Systems Modelling, whose leader was Professor Hélder Coelho (FCUL).

1997-present: Coordination of a SOCRATES/ERASMUS program for staff and student exchange between the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal and other international universities, including the Staffordshire University (UK), the Vaasa Institute of Technology (Finland) and the University of Konstanz.

1997-2000: Coordination of a research project under development at the School of Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal entitled "Heterogeneous Information Systems Integration in Organizational Environments". This project, financed by the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal, involved a team of five researchers and was completed successfully. It proposed a new multi-agent system model and construction methodology, which were evaluated using an internal case-study.

1996-1999: Representation of the School of Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal in the project PRAXIS XXI - P/SAU/0074/96, financed by the Foundation for the Science and Technology in Portugal. This project was developed in collaboration with the Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST) and the Instituto do Sono e Cronobiologia (ISTEL). In the scope of this project, the role of the School of Technology was to develop an Expert System in the area of sleep diagnosis using polysomnographic data.

MSc

Co-orientation of Dominic Peciuch on A Case Study of an Agent Communication Environment (Dr. Bernadette Sharp was the Principal Supervisor). Thesis completed in 2000, at Staffordshire University, UK.

PhD

Co-orientation of Jose Cordeiro on his work entitled "A Normative Approach to Information Systems Modelling" (Professor Kecheng Liu is the Principal Supervisor). Thesis started in 2002 and expected to complete in 2005, at Reading University, UK.

Co-orientation of Angela Nobre on her work entitled "Facilitating Learning in Knowledge Intensive Organisations" (Dr. Bernadette Sharp is the Principal Supervisor). Thesis started in 2001 and expected to complete in 2004, at Staffordshire University, UK.

2002: Organized a tutorial, on the subject "Intertextuality at Work: Large-Scale Structure of Information Systems", lectured by Dr. Rodney Clarke, in September, at EST-Setubal.

2002: Internal meeting for presentation of the internal research project on "e-learning", with the presence of Dr. Anatol Holt and representatives of several Schools from the IPS, in April, at EST-Setubal.

2001: Organized a tutorial lectured by people from the software consulting Portuguese firm "Novabase" on the subject of "Getting Consultancy Skills", in April, Setubal.

2001: Coordinated the local organizing committee for the second Meeting of Informatics Service Centers in Portugal" in collaboration with FCCN (Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional), in February 15,16, at EST-Setúbal.

2000: Organized a tutorial, on the subject of "Agent Architectures in Distributed Artificial Intelligence", lectured by Prof. Helder Coelho, in April, at EST-Setubal.

2000: Organized a tutorial, on the subject "Software Agents for Electronic Commerce", lectured by Prof. Frank Dignum, in May, ESTSetúbal.

1999: Organized a tutorial, on the subject “Professional Expertise in AS400", lectured by two representatives of IBM Portugal, in May, at EST-Setubal.
